Ceramic Christmas Ornament - Sunflower Ornament

Bring a bit of sunshine and spring to your holiday tree or window sill. This ceramic Christmas ornament has two sunflowers on a cobalt blue background.

Inspiration for this piece was taken from my families surroundings in mid-western Kansas. We have fields of sunflowers as well as sunflowers popping up along the road side. Our state flag has a deep blue background and the yellow of the sunflower just pops against it.

The ornament is slip cast using a plaster mold and the pour hole is closed. My husband carves the sunflower into the plain ornament when the piece is in a leather hard state, and a ornament wire is then inserted before it is fired for the first time. We then apply the cobalt blue color to the background, followed by three shades of yellow on the petals and three textured glazes to the sunflower’s center. It is then sprayed with a clear glaze coat to provide it with its glass coating and fired for the second time. An accent of your choice is then applied to the petals and center of the sunflower to further highlight the piece.

Each ornament is one of a kind. Duplicates will be similar but will never be exactly the same as shown.
